Project thesis: Analysis of the Dunckerley method for eigenfrequency estimations

Beitrag von SKF-Institut » Fr, 14. Dez. 18, 15:46

Analysis of the Dunckerley method for eigenfrequency estimations
(Analyse der Dunckerley Methode zur Abschätzung von Eigenfrequenzen)

Thesis:
Project-thesis

Background:
The Dunckerley method has its origin in the late 19th century and evolved to a frequently used method to make an assessment of eigenfrequencies of complex structures. This is mainly due to its simplicity. Furthermore, the results gained with the Dunckerley method are said to represent a lower bound for the eigenfrequency estimation. Until today the Dunckerley method has been frequently used, but neither its limitations nor a guideline for its application is established.

Tasks:
  1. Evaluate the context in which the method has been used in the literature and critically review the original work of Dunckerley and the derivation of Mott-Smith (1973) which is based on Rayleigh approach. It also needs to be checked if there are similar papers published.
  2. Make an assessment of how the Dunckerley method can be derived and check how valid earlier attempts are.
  3. Define the limitations of the method and a guideline for application.
The work is seen with a focus on, but not limited to marine structures.
