International Question (help!) :)

Beitrag von Adnan » Do, 08. Mär. 07, 00:53

Hey everybody...

Ok I'm not so sure if I should type in German or English, but since my English is like a trillion times better, I'll stick to it.

Okay.. so I grew up in Dubai (the U.A.E) and after finishing school I moved to Vienna. I've been living in Vienna for about 7 months, in which I spent my time mostly by drinking quite a lot as well as learning a lot of German (although Austrian German ist totalll im Arsch).

I've started studying "Process and Chemical Engineering" at the Technische Universitaet Wien, but it's getting way too stressful to do EVERYTHING in German. So I researched the internet and found a program which seemed pretty good at the TUHH, it's called "General Engineering Sciences". It's kinda like a program where it's divied into 2 years of basic engineering, 1 year of specialisation and then the masters follow. Ok so I read on the website that more than 50% of this entire bachealors program is held in English, but when I checked the Vorlesungsverzeichnis, I noticed that only very few courses are offered in English and they are exclusively in the first year.

So.... I'm asking you guys if it is true, if this "international program" of general engineering is held mostly in English throughout the entire study, or is it just a few courses of the first year.

I'd love it if it was for the entire program :)

One other thing. How is Hamburg? Is the city pretty cool?

Thank you guys A LOT!!! And possibly, see you guys soon...

Hi, can't tell you much about GES (General Engineering Sciences) but I _can_ tell you that Hamburg is a really nice city and you won't have to stop spending your time drinking ;-)
"If a President--any President-- allowed his course to be set by those who demonstrate, he would betray the trust of all the rest. Whatever the issue, to allow government policy to be made in the streets would destroy the democratic process. It ...would give the decision, not to the majority, and not to those with the strongest arguments, but to those with the loudest voices."

You start with a high percentage of Englisch Lectures and then the percentage is reduced in the following semesters.

In the 1st semester you've got the following lectures:
- Maths 1 (in English)
- Physics (in English)
- Electrical Engineering 1 (in English)
- Mechanics 1 (in English)
- Chemie 1 (in German)
- Konstruktionslehre 1 (in German)

In the 2nd semester:
- Maths 2 (in English)
- Electrical Engineering 2 (in English)
- Mechanics 2 (in English)
- Chemie 2 (in German)
- Konstruktionslehre 2 (in German)
- Thermodynamik 1 (in German)
- Informatik 1 (Germann)

From the 3rd to the 6th semester most lectures are held in German.

So GES is not really an "international program", it just gives the foreign students a smoother start at a German university.

On the other hand the Masters Programs here at the TUHH are international programs, almost completly in Englisch.

Oh ok thanks a lot!

What about the exams of the German classes? Could I write those in English or does that HAVE TO BE in German?

Furthermore, are those German-held lectures really difficult? Like, do you have to be reaallly fluent in German to actually to be able to do well in them?

The reason I'm asking if because I did a German course, passed it really well, and now I'm finding it insanely hard to do studies in German? Would you recommend this program for me, or would you advise me to stay in Vienna at the TU-W?

Thanks!

Its hard to tell, it depends how good your German is.
When you can pass such test as "TestDaf" or other German language test, then your ready to attend lectures in German.

I know a chinese girl, who studied German very extensively for about a year and her German skills now match the level of the lectures. But I guess chinese people are really ambitious when it comes to such things

As to the structure of GES: The specialization actually begins in the 3rd and 4th semester, when you choose some technical electives on top of the core subjects.

Another point to note is that due to the MSc courses offered at the TUHH some of your lectures in the 5th and 6th semester of GES will also be held in English.

Even in those lectures taught in German there is sometimes help provided for English speaking students, like English course material or exam papers.

I'd say: If your program at the TU-W is exclusively taught in German and this is imposing problems for you, GES will probably be more suitable.

Without knowing too much about Vienna and especially the exams at TU-W, my hunch is that Hamburg is superior in terms of party, but on the other hand GES will get you stressed as well, since -being interdisciplinary- it comprises the core subjects of several BSc programs.

Great!

To Sir K: My God I know what you mean, the Chinese work really crazily hard and get what they want. I do work hard for what I want, but to be honest, I just simply can't sit down and study for 7 hours everyday. Life isn't ALL about studying anyway.

Well I think I got to know a lot of information, my decision is based on just one more thing. I know I'm so annoying asking question after question but I promise this should be my last one:
Let's say that I'm doing the GES and would like to get into the line of Process Engineering from the 5th semester. What would be the classes that I'd take in those 5th and 6th semester? I tried looking around the TU-HH homepage but couldn't find something. If someone could tell me that'd be fantastic.

Lastly, I have many Austrian friends that have been to Hamburg and they say it's really nice. They told me it's got green parks everywhere, a vibrant night scene (as well as a vibrant gay scene), and they also mentioned that the way some of the people speak in Hamburg is so nice and different! You guys should hear the Viennese, they replace all their A's with O's (z.B olles klooaaar instead of alles klar.) Vienna is a really nice city, it's really old (probably Hamburg is modern?) and the bad thing is that it has a lot of old people, and trust me, die alten Frauen jammern und beschwerden about anything.

Thanks again guys :D
Addy

It's never annoying ;)

You can get the examination regulations here.

However, to get the list of examination subjects (which is not part of the regulations but rather constitutes an appendix to the regulations), I suggest to send an email to Kerstin Weber (k.weber@tuhh.de). She's in charge of the examination affairs for GES.

Alright, I got a list of what's required for the entire study (the 6 semesters.) It looks very German and almost really hard so maybe this won't be a possibilty although I was really really looking forward to studying this engineering program at Hamburg! :( :(
Is it possible for NON-GERMAN / NON-EU students at the TU-HH to do one year study abroad beggining from the 3rd semester? And would we get financial support for that?

Thanks, I hope there's still a little bit of hope!!

P.S. This forum has been really helpful

As far as i know you wont get any financial support in Germany as a non EU student. You can try to read this one, but it is in German:

<a href="http://www.studierendenwerk-hamburg.de/ ... nformation about Bafög for foreign students</a>

there are some posibillities for non EU students, but i dont think they will match you situation.

You can try to get your exams from vienna accepted by the TU, but it really depends on the "Prüfungsausschuss".
